About this species.

Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) is the most distinctive of Florida's three mangrove species — the one with the iconic arching prop roots that hold up shorelines from the Keys to Cedar Key. Protected under the Florida Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act (MTPA), which means you cannot touch it without specific authorization or a state-certified Mangrove Trimming Professional.

Identification

  • Distinctive arching aerial prop roots emerging from the trunk and branches, forming a complex root structure standing in tidal water.
  • Smooth gray bark on the trunk and upper roots; reddish-brown beneath when scraped (the 'red' in red mangrove).
  • Glossy elliptical 3–5 inch dark green leathery leaves arranged opposite on the stems.
  • Distinctive cigar-shaped propagules (pre-germinated seedlings) up to 10 inches long, dropping from the parent tree to plant themselves in the mud.
  • Grows in the wettest tidal zone — usually with the prop roots in standing water at high tide.
  • Multi-trunked, dense thicket-forming habit along shorelines.

Why it's protected

Mangroves are the foundation of Florida's coastal ecosystems. They stabilize shorelines, prevent erosion during storms, serve as nursery habitat for fish and shellfish (most commercial Florida fisheries depend on mangrove nurseries), and absorb wave energy. Florida's MTPA was enacted in 1996 specifically to protect them after decades of destruction by coastal development.

What MTPA means in practice

  • You cannot remove a red mangrove without DEP authorization. Period.
  • Trimming red mangroves above 24 ft typically requires a state-certified Mangrove Trimming Professional (MTP) — not just any tree-service contractor.
  • Trimming between 10 and 24 ft is allowed by property owners within specific height-percentage limits, but the rules are strict.
  • Mangroves under 6 ft are more permissive but local rules still apply.
  • Civil penalties for MTPA violations routinely run into the thousands per tree, plus mitigation requirements.

If you have red mangroves on your property

Document the current state with dated photos. Don't touch them beyond the most minor maintenance. Before any work — even a 'just a little' trim — get a professional opinion from someone certified to make the call. The cost of a consultation is a tiny fraction of an MTPA penalty.

For storm-damaged mangroves, contact DEP or your delegated local authority before any cleanup that goes beyond removing debris. Cutting damaged mangroves still falls under MTPA.

What to know.

  • Permit and supervision required for any pruning, alteration, or removal.
  • Trimming the wrong way can constitute a federal-level violation. Document everything.
  • High wind-resistance score — one of the better choices for Florida hurricane country.

Frequently asked.

Can I remove the red mangroves on my property?

Not without DEP authorization. Removal of red mangroves is heavily restricted under Florida MTPA. Even for legitimate purposes — view, dock access, construction — authorization is required and not always granted. Removing them without permission carries substantial civil penalties.

Can I trim my own red mangroves?

Limited trimming is allowed for mangroves under specific heights, within strict percentage limits. For anything taller than 10 ft, you almost certainly need a state-certified Mangrove Trimming Professional. We can refer you to a certified MTP for any work that requires one.

What if a hurricane damages my mangroves?

Document the damage with dated photos, then contact DEP or your delegated local authority before doing cleanup that goes beyond removing fallen debris. Cutting damaged mangroves still falls under MTPA — even when the damage is real and the tree is clearly dying. Don't assume you can clean up freely after a storm.
